"David did an excellent job explaining the technical details of the Medicaid program. Good balance between information and some of the more complex issues, particularly those related to assets."
Maureen Sorbet, L&S Associates
"It was one of the best seminars I've attended and provided me with the level of detail I needed."
Kim Winokur, Esq., Law Offices of Kim Winokur PLC
"This was just an excellent seminar. I appreciate the time given by all the speakers to bring the rest of us up to speed, and to confirm or deny all the Medicaid urban myths."
Rebecca McClear, Esq.
If you work with older adults, chances are you need to know the ins and outs of the Medicaid program to correctly advise and guide them. Are you tired of being unsure about Medicaid policies? Are you up to speed with recent changes? Do you want to learn from some of the top elder law and Medicaid experts in Michigan? Your time is precious. Here's an opportunity to get reliable information about key parts of Medicaid in a short time at an affordable price. Sign up for Elder Law of Michigan's Medicaid Boot Camp and learn a wealth of knowledge in just one day!
The Medicaid Boot Camp differs from other Medicaid training in that it is a comprehensive overview of Medicaid from the ground up...not just an update on recent changes. The training starts at a level accessible to those new to Medicaid or for those who have been away from the field for awhile. It focuses on the types of Medicaid older adults are most likely to need. Recognized Medicaid expert, Attorney David L. Shaltz is the lead trainer. He will be joined in Macomb by Sanford Mall and Michele Fuller.
Participants will also receive Elder Law of Michigan's Primer of Michigan's Medicaid Program that reflects all the recent changes in Michigan's Medicaid program. The cost is only $205 for attorneys in private practice or other professionals and $130 for legal assistants and legal services staff or people who work in non-profit organizations! There is an extra charge for Social Worker CE Credit. A light lunch is included in the fee.
Pro bono attorneys can also sign up at the reduced rate of $130. Group rates for 3 or more are also available. Click here to register or call Alyssa Johnson at 517.853.2370! All proceeds from the training will be used to support the work of Elder Law of Michigan, a 501 c3 charitable organization providing legal and human services to older adults of modest means in Michigan.

- Legislative Luncheon on Elder Economic Security
On October 28, 2009, over 60 members of the Michigan Legislature and their staff met over lunch with Elder Law of Michigan, AARP and the AARP Foundation to discuss the economic situation of older adults in Michigan. The event featured new information on the cost to retire in Michigan segmented by county, home type, family size and health status, provided by the Elder Economic Standard IndexTM.
Participants commented on the value of the information and appreciated the opportunity to think about the difficult circumstances that many of their constituents face. "I understand that it can be really hard for an older adult to return to the workforce, especially right now when jobs are scarce. I didn't really understand how difficult it would be to get by on social security alone," commented one participant. "It is eye opening, and little scary," said another.
Elder Law of Michigan staff are available to meet one on one with Legislators who were unable to attend on October 28. "We want everyone to understand that the down turn in the economy has consequences for all our citizens, including 'retirees.' A fixed income no longer means that older adults are getting by financially and living with their most basic needs met," said Kate White, Executive Director of Elder Law.

- Pension Over Breakfast
On November 4th ELM's Mid-America Pension Rights Project hosted an informal networking event for private pension attorneys in southeast Michigan. Kate White and Christa Schofield met with private practitioners, as well as a district court judge and attorneys employed by large labor unions. Kate led a lively discussion about the services of the pension project and ELM's other programs. The event introduced ELM and the pension project to new contacts and reinforced friendships with ELM supporters.
